"we updated our website"

These days, almost every company has a website, where you register to (a) receive info or promos, (b) pay your bill, or (c) monitor an account.

This has happened to me twice in the last week: I go to log into a website, and my login information doesn't work. I either call the support number (if there is one), or email their "contact us" email address, and either wait 20 minutes on hold or 3 days for an email response.

Both these times, the response has been "Oh, we updated our website, so you need to re-register."

Seriously?

I don't understand why an "updated" website would require re-registration in the first place, but if you don't have the technology to move your database over, then, you have my email address (you required it when I first registered) -- you couldn't tell me you were doing this?

  1. I hear ya....it is so annoying. The only thing I can think of is that either the database they are moving from or moving to has no easy way to export/import the data over. Rather than spend man hours on doing it....they assume that if people are interested to come back then they will most likely re-register. As why they can't notify you that they will be doing that......that's just poor customer service.

On a related note I learned that if you are ever on hold stuck with one of those Audio Response Unit (You know the ones "Your call is important to us. Press 1 to pay your bill. Press 2 to wait 30 minutes")......most of these systems are designed to understand SWEAR WORDS.

When this happens the system assumes an irate customer and rather than keep them on hold or reroute them to another part of the automated system......they will pipe you to a real person ASAP.

I haven't tried this out yet......but I have a few companies that come to mind to do.
